Recorded at Goodnight L.A. Studios in Los Angeles, it was produced by Keith Olsen. The making of the album was complicated by health issues encountered by both keyboard player Keith Emerson and drummer Carl Palmer. Emerson had trouble with the ulnar nerve, which made it difficult for him to control his right hand. As the prognosis for recovery after the surgical treatment was not promising, he had to overdub the right-hand parts with his left hand. Palmer suffered problems with carpal tunnel syndrome, which led to numbness in his fingers, but was rid of it by an operation.[2] Despite the efforts from the renowned producer, the album was a commercial flop. It received very little airplay and was the only Emerson, Lake & Palmer studio recording not to chart on the US Billboard 200. In the Hot Seat is their least-selling album.[2] "Daddy" was written by Lake in memory of missing child Sara Anne Wood and was used to raise awareness of missing and abducted children. The royalties from the song initially brought in $5,000 and were donated to the Sara Anne Wood Rescue Center, a national non-profit foundation established by Wood's father.[3] Track listing{{Track listing| total_length = 46:05 | title1 = Hand of Truth | writer1 = Keith Emerson, Greg Lake | length1 = 5:23 | title2 = Daddy | writer2 = Lake | length2 = 4:42 | title3 = One by One | writer3 = Emerson, Lake, Keith Olsen | length3 = 5:08 | title4 = Heart on Ice | writer4 = Lake, Olsen | length4 = 4:20 | title5 = Thin Line | writer5 = Bill Wray, Olsen, Emerson | length5 = 4:46 | title6 = Man in the Long Black Coat | writer6 = Bob Dylan (arrangement: Emerson) | length6 = 4:12 | title7 = Change | writer7 = Wray, Emerson, Olsen | length7 = 4:44 | title8 = Give Me a Reason to Stay | writer8 = Steve Diamond, Sam Lorber | length8 = 4:14 | title9 = Gone Too Soon | writer9 = Lake, Wray, Keith Wechsler | length9 = 4:12 | title10 = Street War | writer10 = Emerson, Lake | length10 = 4:24 }}{{Track listing | collapsed = yes | headline = CD bonus track | total_length = 61:34 | title11 = Pictures at an Exhibition" a.
