As such, the proportion measures the charge density at the surface of the ion; usually the denser the charge, the stronger will be the bond that the ion forms.[2] The ionic potential gives the sense of how strongly or weakly the ion will be attracted, electrostatically, to ions of opposite charge; and to what extent the ion will repel other ions of like charge. It measures the polarising power of a cation. See also
