Communist Party of Nepal (Manandhar) was a splinter group of the Communist Party of Nepal (Rayamjhi) formed in 1979, in the backdrop of the popular movement that surged in that year. The party was led by Bishnu Bahadur Manandhar. CPN (Manandhar) was clearly pro-Soviet Union. Ahead of the 1991 parliamentary election the party changed name to Communist Party of Nepal (Democratic). CPN (D) contested the 1991 parliamentary elections, having launched 75 candidates. Two MPs were elected. In total the party got 177 323 votes (2.43%). Two months after the election CPN (Democratic) merged with two other parties, Communist Party of Nepal (Burma) and Communist Party of Nepal (Amatya), to form Communist Party of Nepal (United). However, the Burma and Amatya factions left CPN (United) to join Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). See also
