}} Mesopithecus ("middle monkey") is an extinct genus of Old World monkey that lived in Europe and western Asia 7 to 5 million years ago. It was once thought that it might be an ancestor of the grey langur, but a more recent study[1] suggests that they are more closely related to the snub-nosed monkeys and doucs. Mesopithecus resembled a modern macaque, with a body length of about {{convert|40|cm|in}}. It was adapted to both walking and climbing, possessing a slender body with long, muscular limbs and flexible fingers. Its teeth suggest that it primarily ate soft leaves and fruit.[2]Paleobiology{{Empty section|date=June 2014}}References1. ^{{cite journal |last1 = Pan |first1 = Ruliang |last2 = Groves |first2 = Colin |last3 = Oxnard |first3 = Charles |title = Relationships Between the Fossil Colobine Mesopithecus pentelicus and Extant Cercopithecoids, Based on Dental Metrics |journal = American Journal of Primatology |volume = 62 |pages = 287–299 |year = 2004 |url = http://arts.anu.edu.au/grovco/Mesopithecus%20Pan%20Oxnard.pdf |format = PDF |accessdate = 2009-01-26 |doi = 10.1002/ajp.20022 |pmid = 15085533 |issue = 4 |deadurl = yes |archiveurl = https://web.archive.org/web/20080727150615/http://arts.anu.edu.au/grovco/Mesopithecus%20Pan%20Oxnard.pdf |archivedate = 2008-07-27 |df = }} 2. ^{{cite book |editor=Palmer, D.|year=1999 |title= The Marshall Illustrated Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals|publisher= Marshall Editions|location=London|pages= 289|isbn= 1-84028-152-9}} External links
