| synonyms_ref =[3] }} The Mexican Plateau horned lizard[4] (Phrynosoma orbiculare) is a species of horned lizard.[3] It is also known as the Chihuahua Desert horned lizard.[7] The specific epithet, orbiculare, comes from the Latin adjective orbis, meaning "circular".[4] DescriptionPhrynosoma orbiculare has a characteristic single row of lateral abdominal fringe scales. This "horned toad" also has two short occipital horns.[5]Geographic rangeP. orbiculare is found only in the high plateau country of central Mexico. Specifically, it is found in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, and Nuevo León. Its range continues southeast through Morelos, Puebla and Veracruz.[5]HabitatP. orbiculare occurs in a wide range of primary (dry scrubland, pine-oak forest, oak forest, juniper forest) and secondary habitats (agricultural land, and agave and Opuntia fields).[1]SubspeciesFive subspecies of P. orbiculare are recognized as being valid, including the nominotypical subspecies.[3]
Nota bene: A trinomial authority in parentheses indicates that the subspecies was originally described in a genus other than Phrynosoma. EtymologyThe subspecific name, cortezii, is in honor of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés.[13] The subspecific name, dugesii, is in honor of French-born Mexican naturalist Alfredo Dugès, who is considered the "father" of Mexican herpetology.[6] References1. ^1 {{cite journal|authors=Mendoza-Quijano F, Vázquez Díaz J, Quintero Díaz GE|title=Phrynosoma orbiculare|journal=IUCN Red List of Threatened Species|volume=2007|page= e.T64079A12734405|publisher=IUCN|year=2007|doi=10.2305/IUCN.UK.2007.RLTS.T64079A12734405.en}} 2. ^{{ITIS|id=208837 |taxon=Phrynosoma orbiculare (Linnaeus, 1758) |accessdate=30 October 2015}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{NRDB species|genus=Phrynosoma |species=orbiculare |accessdate=30 October 2015}} 4. ^1 {{cite book|title=Introduction to Horned Lizards of North America|last=Sherbrooke|first=Wade C.|year=2003|publisher=University of California Press|location=|isbn=|page=61|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=sWe-cPzyviAC&pg=PA61&lpg=PA61&dq=Mexican+Plateau+horned+lizard&source=bl&ots=rijP5T-bIh&sig=DMB9tK4kAaTBRt-pHjhAomtTWxM&hl=no&sa=X&ved=0CEQQ6AEwB2oVChMI-eWAzu7qyAIVA7xyCh04nQm-#v=onepage&q=Mexican%20Plateau%20horned%20lizard&f=false}} 5. ^1 2 {{cite web|url=http://digimorph.org/specimens/phrynosoma_orbiculare/|title=Phrynosoma orbiculare, Chihuahua Desert Horned Lizard|author=Hodges, Wendy|year=2003|work=Digimorph.org|publisher=|accessdate=30 October 2015}} 6. ^1 Beolens, Bo; Watkins, Michael; Grayson, Michael (2011).
