Pant is part of a compound of North Indian and Marathi surnames of people with a Hindu Brahmin background. The Pant surname is derived from the title pandit, symbolizing the community's traditional commitment to scholarship.

People with Pant in their surname belong to the Marathi Brahmin and Kumauni Brahmin community, originally centered in Uttarakhand and to a lesser extent, Nepal.
