The Pant surname is derived from the title pandit, symbolizing the community's traditional commitment to scholarship. People with Pant in their surname belong to the Marathi Brahmin and Kumauni Brahmin community, originally centered in Uttarakhand and to a lesser extent, Nepal. The ancestors of these families migrated from the western India, particularly from the Konkan area of Karnataka/Maharashtra to their current Himalayan home.
