HistoryThe hospital has its origins in a general dispensary in central Paisley which opened in 1786 and became a house of recovery in 1805.[2] A new facility financed by William Barbour and designed by Thomas Graham Abercrombie was completed at Calside in July 1896.[3] In the early 1980s it was decided to create a modern hospital in Craw Road and the new facility was officially opened by Princess Alexandra in May 1988.[4] The hospital received patients from the 2007 Glasgow Airport attack, including one of the suspects who was taken to the hospital under arrest with severe burns. Parts of the hospital were later evacuated when a suspect device, originally believed to be a suicide belt, was discovered on the suspect.[5] On the afternoon of 1 July a controlled explosion of a car was carried out in the car park of the hospital.[6] The children's ward at the hospital closed in February 2018.[7] ServicesThe hospital has 760 staffed beds.[8] It contains the only consultant-led maternity unit for the south Clyde area, after the maternity wards at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Vale of Leven Hospital became midwife-led in 2003.[9] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.nhsggc.org.uk/locations/hospitals/royal-alexandra-hospital/ |title=Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley|publisher=NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde|accessdate=16 January 2019}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB39057|title=Alexandra Gate and former Royal Alexandra Infirmary, excluding later flat-roofed section to north, Neilston Road, Paisley|publisher=Historic Environment Scotland|accessdate=16 January 2019}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=https://historic-hospitals.com/2016/12/18/former-royal-alexandra-infirmary-paisley/|title=Royal Alexandra Hospital|publisher=Historic Hospitals|accessdate=16 January 2019}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.nhsggc.org.uk/patients-and-visitors/main-hospital-sites/royal-alexandra-campus/a-brief-history/|title=A brief history|publisher=NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde|accessdate=16 January 2019}} 5. ^{{cite web|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6257194.stm |title=Blazing car crashes into airport|publisher=BBC News|date=30 June 2007|accessdate=16 January 2019}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6258062.stm|publisher=BBC News|title=PM defiant over 'al-Qaeda threat'|date=1 July 2007|accessdate=14 July 2014}} 7. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-42750600|title=Paisley children's ward closure goes ahead|publisher=BBC|date=19 January 2018|accessdate=16 January 2019}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.healthcareimprovementscotland.org/our_work/inspecting_and_regulating_care/hei_greater_glasgow_reports/royal_alexandra_oct_12.aspx |title=Royal Alexandra Hospital |publisher=Healthcare Improvement Scotland |date=4 September 2012 |accessdate=13 July 2014}} 9. ^{{cite news| url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/3059525.stm | work=BBC News | title=Maternity unit shake-up unveiled | date=11 July 2003 | accessdate=22 May 2010}} External links
