The species is named in honor of Dr. Lee Simmons, former director of the Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo in Nebraska. Simmons' mouse lemur is the largest of the east coast mouse lemurs. The body is dark reddish to orange brown with black-tipped hairs on the crown and sometimes a stripe down middle of the back. There is a distinctive white patch on the snout and the belly is grayish white to white. The discovery of this species was announced June 21, 2006 at the Conservation International Global Symposium in Antananarivo, Madagascar, along with the discovery of Mittermeier's mouse lemur Microcebus mittermeieri and Jolly's mouse lemur Microcebus jollyae as separate species.[4] These new species were also officially announced in a paper in the International Journal of Primatology.[5] References1. ^{{cite journal|title=Lemur Diversity in Madagascar|author=Mittermeier, R., Ganzhorn, J., Konstant, W., Glander, K., Tattersall, I., Groves, C., Rylands, A., Hapke, A., Ratsimbazafy, J., Mayor, M., Louis, E., Rumpler, Y., Schwitzer, C. & Rasoloarison, R.|journal=International Journal of Primatology|doi=10.1007/s10764-008-9317-y|pages=1607–1656|volume=29|issue=6|date=December 2008}} {{Wikispecies|Microcebus simmonsi|Simmons' mouse lemur}}{{Cheirogaleidae nav}}{{Taxonbar|from=Q1351736}}2. ^1 {{Cite journal | author = Andriaholinirina, N. | display-authors = etal | title = Microcebus simmonsi | journal = The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species | volume = 2014 | page = e.T136744A16113787 | publisher = IUCN | date = 2014 | url = http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/136744/0 | doi = 10.2305/IUCN.UK.2014-1.RLTS.T136744A16113787.en | access-date = 5 January 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web | url = http://checklist.cites.org/#/en/search/scientific_name=Microcebus | title = Checklist of CITES Species | website = CITES | publisher = UNEP-WCMC | accessdate = 18 March 2015}} 4. ^Three new lemurs take a bow in Madagascar - Modified news release from CI 5. ^{{cite journal | title = Revision of the Mouse Lemurs (Microcebus) of Eastern Madagascar | pages = 347–389 |author1=Edward E.
