The park is also believed to mark where Major Powell started a similar expedition down the two rivers in 1869. These two expeditions are generally considered to have covered the last large land area in the continental United States left unexplored by European-Americans. Expedition Island was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 24, 1968.[1][3] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=http://tps.cr.nps.gov/nhl/detail.cfm?ResourceId=808&ResourceType=Site|title=Expedition Island |accessdate=2007-10-20|work=National Historic Landmark summary listing|publisher=National Park Service}} 2. ^{{NRISref|2007a}} 3. ^{{Cite journal|title=National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination: Expedition Island|url={{NHLS url|id=68000056}} |format=pdf|date=January 3, 1976 |author=Stephen Lissandrello |publisher=National Park Service}} and {{NHLS url|id=68000056|title=Accompanying 5 photos, from 1975 and c.1900.|photos=y}} {{small|(824 KiB)}} External links
