| name = Ulmus glabra 'Dovaei' | species = Ulmus glabra | cultivar = 'Dovaei' | origin = France }} The Wych Elm cultivar Ulmus glabra 'Dovaei' was raised by the André Leroy nursery at Angers, France, as Ulmus dovaei before 1868. DescriptionLeroy described the tree as vigorous, well-shaped, large-leaved, and 'proper for avenues'.[1] The Herbarium of the Arnold Arboretum holds a leaf-spray and samara specimen of U. glabra 'Dovaei' (spelled 'Davaei') sourced from the Ellwanger & Barry nursery.[2] The leaves shown in this spray have petioles longer than the wych type, which are shorter than 5 mm,[3] while the samarae are intermediate. Ellwanger & Barry were known to have applied questionable cultivar names to other clones.[4] Cultivation'Dovaei' is not known to remain in cultivation in Europe. The tree was introduced to the Dominion Arboretum, Ottawa, Canada in 1893 as U. montana Dovaei (syn. U. campestris Dovaei).[5] It appeared as U. Dovaei in the 1904 catalogue of Kelsey's, New York,[6] and as U. montana Dovaei, "an upright, vigorous-growing variety with large leaves", in the 1922 catalogue of Clibran's of Altrincham, England.[7] Introduced to Australia, the tree was marketed in the early 20th century by the Gembrook Nursery near Melbourne and Searl's Garden Emporium in Sydney. It was planted along the Avenue of Honour in Ballarat in 1918.[8] It is not known whether it survives there or elsewhere in Australia. Synonymy
