The village is located along the European route E39 highway at a crossroads with the village of Ålgård about {{convert|20|km}} to the northwest, the village of Dirdal (in Gjesdal) about {{convert|25|km}} to the northeast, and the town of Egersund about {{convert|20|km}} to the south. The lake Svelavatnet lies along the south side of the village. The {{convert|0.81|km2|acre|adj=on}} village has a population (2015) of 1,043 which gives the village a population density of {{convert|1288|PD/km2}}.[2] The village is the largest village in the municipality. It is the seat of the municipal council and the main commercial area in the municipality including a Coop Marked store.
