It was re-established after World War II as an affiliate of the Gakushūin School Corporation. The privatized successor to the original Gakushūin University (or "Peers School") was established during the Meiji period to educate the children of the Japanese nobility. It is still one of the most prestigious universities in Japan, counting most of the members of the present Imperial Family among its former or present students.[2] The average number of students is capped so that each student can receive personal attention from the staff.[3] Faculties
The university provides a range of Japanese-language classes for foreign students. Although designed for Japanese students, approximately 60 classes are held in English. Each year the University admits approximately 80 foreign students (including short-term exchange students) of high academic and social standing to study in each faculty and graduate school.{{citation needed|date=January 2010}} Academic rankings{{Infobox Japanese university ranking| TSU_N = 72 | Kawai_N = | TR_N = | WE_N = 14 | NikkeiBP_G = 10 | NikkeiBP_H = | NikkeiBP_K = | NikkeiBP_C = | NikkeiBP_KOY = | GBUDU_N = A1 | LINE_1 = 0 | QS_A = 161 | ARWU_A = | LINE_2 = 0 | QS_W = | ARWU_W = | TR_W = | ENSMP_W = 92 | LINE_3 = 0 | NOTE_1 = The data of NBP is in 2009 rankings because of availability. }}{{Infobox Japanese university ranking (By Subject) | SOC_1 = 0 | LAW_1 = 0 | ASAHI_L = | BE_N = 25 | BE_PR = 27 | ECON_1 = | RE_N = | RE_W = | BUS_1 = | ED_N = | ED_W = | CPA_N = | LINE_1 = | NSTR_1 = | ENG_1 = | NENG_N = | MAT_1 = | TR_N1 = | TR_W1 = | PHY_1 = | TR_N2 = | TR_W2 = | CHE_1 = | TR_N3 = | TR_W3 = | BIO_1 = | TR_N4 = | TR_W4 = | MATH_1 = | ARWU_N1 = | ARWU_W1 = | COM_1 = | ARWU_N2 = | ARWU_W2 = | ARC_1 = | ARC_N = | LINE_2 = | LIFE_1 = | IMM_1 = | TR_N5 = | TR_W5 = | PHT_1 = | TR_N6 = | TR_W6 = | LINE_3 = | NOTE_1 = | NOTE_2 = }} General rankingsThe university was ranked 72nd in 2010 (63rd in 2009, 78th in 2008) in the Truly Strong Universities ranking issued by Toyo Keizai.
