George Albert Francis[1] (1928–3[2] or 4[3] April 2002[4][5]), known professionally as George Francis, was a British boxing athletic trainer who trained world champion boxers such as Frank Bruno,[4][5] John Conteh,[6][4][5] Bunny Sterling,[4] John Mugabi, and Cornelius Boza Edwards. BiographyGeorge Francis was born in Camden Town, north London.[5] He was only eight when his father died,{{citation needed|date=June 2018}} and left school at the age of 11[13] to support his family.{{citation needed|date=June 2018}} In the 1930s, he was a bare-knuckle fighter.[7] After a local policemen persuaded him to give that up he turned to amateur boxing.{{citation needed|date=June 2018}} Francis worked his way up the ranks{{explain|date=June 2018}} at Covent Garden Market and eventually became a porter.{{citation needed|date=June 2018}} He was a member of a local boxing club and it was there that he decided to switch from boxer to trainer.{{citation needed|date=June 2018}} These early ventures into the fight game were to be the start of a career which saw him become involved with some of the greatest boxers in the world. Francis was known for making his boxers run on Hampstead Heath and swim in the cold water of Highgate Men's Pond as part of their training.[8][5][7] After Paul McCartney visited Francis's gym to watch Conteh train, McCartney employed Francis's son Michael as a bodyguard.[9] DeathFrancis was found hanged at his home in Hillway, Highgate, apparently having committed suicide[6][7] on 3[10] or 4[11] April 2002.
