The nearest publicly accessible vantage point is Tikaboo Peak, 26 miles to the east. There were two closer vantage points, dubbed "Freedom Ridge" and "White Sides", but they were closed to public access in 1995 to prevent people from taking images of the installation.[6] History{{Main article|Groom Mine}}{{See also|Silver mining in Nevada}}Lead and silver were discovered in the southern part of the Groom Range in 1864,[7] and the English Groome Lead Mines Limited company financed the Conception Mines in the 1870s, giving the district its name (nearby mines included Maria, Willow and White Lake). The mining claims in Groom were acquired by J. B. Osborne and partners and patented in 1876, and Osborne's son acquired the interests in the 1890s.[8] The claims were proved in 1916 when two companies began working their mines; that work continued until 1918, and resuming after World War II until the early 1950s.[8] References1. ^{{cite book|author=Annie Jacobsen|title=Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Pl-B_TL7S8oC&pg=PT7|date=17 May 2011|publisher=Little, Brown|isbn=978-0-316-19385-6|page=7}} {{coord|37|16|N|115|48|W|source:dawiki_region:US_type:landmark|display=title}}{{Nevada-geo-stub}}2. ^{{cite news|last1=Leiby|first1=Richard|title=Government officially acknowledges existence of Area 51, but not the UFOs|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/government-officially-acknowledges-existence-of-area-51-but-not-the-ufos/2013/08/16/ca4feaec-06be-11e3-a07f-49ddc7417125_story.html|accessdate=December 25, 2017|publisher=Washington Post|date=August 16, 2013}} 3. ^{{cite news |last=Marsh |first=Alton K. |date=10 January 2008 |title=Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Area 51 Gets Airport Identifier |url=https://www.aopa.org/news-and-media/all-news/2008/january/10/dont-ask-dont-tell-area-51-gets-airport-identifier |work=AOPA |location=Maryland |access-date=6 March 2019 }} {{cite news |last=Weinberger |first=Sharon |date=18 January 2018 |title=Area 51's New Name: 'Homey Airport' |url=https://www.wired.com/2008/01/area-51-customs/ |work=Wired |location=New York |access-date=6 March 2019 }} 4. ^{{cite gnis|840824|Groom Lake (GNIS code 840824)|accessdate=January 11, 2015}} 5. ^1 DREAMLAND: Fifty Years of Secret Flight Testing in Nevada By Peter W.
