Baník is a Slovak word meaning "miner". Since the 1950s it was given as a name to various sport clubs in Czechoslovakia associated mostly with coal mining regions. In Poland, the same practice was conducted with the name "górnik". Baník still serves as a name of various sport clubs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Baník is also an Indian (Bengal, Assam, and Orissa) and Bangladeshi: Hindu (Baishya) name, from Sanskrit vạnik word meaning ‘merchant’. Banik serves as a name of many families in India, UK and around the world.
