Burfa Castle (also known as Burfa Hillfort, Burfa Bank Hillfort, or Burfa Camp)[1][1][2] is an Iron Age hillfort near the tiny town of Old Radnor, Radnorshire in Powys, Wales. The site is a scheduled monument described as a prehistoric defensive hillfort, and was included in an inventory of monuments by 1913.[3][4] The site is near Offa's Dyke which passes near the bottom of Burfa Bank.{{r|Pevsner}} The site is an important multivallate site and measures 579 metres by 187 metres.[5] Little of the hillfort is visible today and the site has been badly damaged by forestry.{{r|Pevsner}} On the side of the hillfort's likely entrance are three or four banks and ditches, "incorporating a torturous entrance approach".[5] Material dating from the 1st and 2nd century CE has been found at the site.[5] Further, the Radnor Valley was at the edge of known Roman settlements; though the valley is not thought to have been home to any permanent Roman settlements, traces of an auxiliary fort and troop camps have been found in the area, including one at Burfa.[6] References1. ^{{cite web| work = Historic Environment Record (HER)|title=Burfa Bank Hillfort|url=http://www.cofiadurcahcymru.org.uk/arch/query/page.php?prn=CPAT312| via = archwilio (online database of the four Welsh Archaeological Trusts)| publisher = Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust (CPAT)| id = PRN 312|accessdate=10 April 2016}} 2. ^{{cite book| last1 = Haslam| first1 = Richard| title = Powys: (Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, Breconshire)| date = 1992| orig-year = 1979| series = Pevsner Architectural Guides (The Buildings of Wales)| publisher = Penguin Books (University of Wales Press) | location = London| isbn = 978-0-140-71051-9 | oclc = 228662030| page = 277| section = Walton| url = https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=M4Afx2aoNicC&pg=PA277&lpg=PA277&dq=burfa+camp&source=bl&ots=vy2ZT1zY1D&sig=6UAm9DdQQ8bi3gQtSeNnwgA9GXA&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjcipuDkITMAhVEWhoKHTE-C0o4ChDoAQg9MAk#v=onepage&q=burfa%20camp&f=false| accessdate = 10 April 2016| via = google books| ref = harv}} 3. ^{{cite report| title = Burfa Camp| publisher = Cadw| work = National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW)| id = Cadw Id: RD013}} 4. ^{{cite book|series=An Inventory of the Ancient Monuments of Wales and Monmouthshire|volume=III|title= County of Radnor|url=https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=j4atuVVlEmUC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q=burfa%20camp%20lady%20bridges&f=false|pages = 43-44|date=1913|publisher=RCAHMW (HMSO)|via=google books|accessdate=10 April 2016}} 5. ^1 2 3 {{cite web| author-first1 = J. | author-last1 = Wiles| work = National Monuments Record of Wales (NMRW)|title=Burfa Hillfort |url=http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/300469/details/|accessdate=10 April 2016 |date=9 September 2002 | via = coflein (online database of the NMRW)| publisher = Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW)| id = NPRN 300469| ref = harv}} 6. ^{{cite web|last1=Green|first1=Richard|title=The Walton Basin, also called the Radnor Valley|url=http://www.rgreen.org.uk/Radnor.html|accessdate=12 April 2016|date=2012}} Further reading
