He played club level rugby union (RU) for Fairwater RFC (see Rugby in Cardiff), and representative level rugby league (RL) for Wales, and at club level for Oldham and Cardiff City (Bridgend) Blue Dragons, as a {{rlp|fb}}, or {{rlp|wg}}, i.e. number 1, or, 2 or 5, and later as a {{rlp|sr}}, i.e. number 11 or 12, during the era of contested scrums.[1][3][4] BackgroundO'Brien was born in Newtown, Cardiff, Wales.
