The spire is short, and the apex may become worn out in older specimens.[3] The name malleatus derives from Latin malleāre (to hammer) and refers to the "hammered-like sculpture" often found on the shell of this species.[3] References1. ^1 {{cite book|last=Walker|first=Bryant|title=A synopsis of the classification of the fresh-water Mollusca of North America, north of Mexico, and a catalogue of the more recently described species|publisher=The University of Michigan|location=Ann Arbor|date=1918}} 2. ^Bouchet, P.
