Co-founded in 1964 by Walter Hachborn and headquartered in St. Jacobs, Ontario, the chain is co-operatively owned by over 1100 independently owned member stores, including one of them located in the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon.[1][2] Store brandsHome Hardware store brands are well known in Canada and include:
Recent historyIn 1981 the Eastern-based Home Hardware merged with Western-based Link Hardware to create a national chain. Home Hardware has survived the expansion of The Home Depot into Canada, beginning in 1994, as well as the expansion of a domestic competitor, Rona, Inc., into the big-box arena. In 2000, the chain expanded through the purchase of the Beaver Lumber chain from Molson Brewery.[3] On January 11, 2003, Home Hardware received unexpected worldwide exposure, when a T-shirt worn by Avril Lavigne during a performance on Saturday Night Live featured her hometown of Greater Napanee, Ontario and the local hardware store there. In response, the chain produced a limited-edition line of identical T-shirts for sale at locations nationwide, with proceeds going to charity.[4] In 2004, Canada Post issued a postage stamp to commemorate the company's 40th anniversary. [5] The stamp was designed by Home Hardware's creative director, Ron Mugford.[6]References1. ^History of Home Hardware, Home Hardware website, accessed January 27, 2014 2. ^{{Cite web|url=http://www.homehardware.ca/en/dealer-microsites/3071-2/contact-information.htm|title=Marcel Dagort S.A. - Contact Information|website=www.homehardware.ca|access-date=2016-10-23}} 3. ^Home Hardware Acquisition {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20051215023928/http://www.lexpert.ca/deal.php?id=2093 |date=2005-12-15 }}, Lexpert, February 2000, accessed October 4, 2006 4. ^Fans go ape for Avril T's, Doug Lunney, Winnipeg Sun, March 12, 2003, accessed October 4, 2006 5. ^Canada Post stamp 6. ^Canada's Stamp Details: Home Hardware {{webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140307162201/http://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/personal/collecting/stamps/archives/2004/2004_apr_homehardware.jsf |date=2014-03-07 }} External links{{Commons category}}
