Education and careerBorn in Prattville, Alabama, Thomas received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1928. He was in private practice in Mobile, Alabama from 1929 to 1943. He was an assistant solicitor for Mobile County, Alabama from 1932 to 1939. He was acting solicitor for Mobile County in 1943. He was in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He returned to private practice in Mobile from 1946 to 1951.[1] Federal judicial serviceThomas was nominated by President Harry S. Truman on January 29, 1951, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama vacated by Judge John McDuffie. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 6, 1951, and received his commission on March 9, 1951. He served as Chief Judge from 1966 to 1971. He assumed senior status on August 25, 1971.
