Dhundh (ढुन्ढ) is a ritual (Hindu ceremony) in Rajasthan to be performed on all the children who are less than one year on Holi means taken birth within one year before the Holi.

History

This ritual have a link in the Bhavishya Purana. In which according to one incident that there was a rakshashi (giant) named Dhundh during the reign of king Raghu. According to the Guru Vashishtha's advice, to keep her away, people kindled fires at various spots. Thus the Lord's name and fire kept the demoness away. So on this day we see children making mischief.

Ceremony

The child is married to the Holika after the burning of holi. Then in the evening, people (called Gerias) come to the child's paternal home. The child is dressed into new dress and to be seated in the lap of his relatives on the Bajotia (a wooden seat). Then Gerias dance around the child and beat on a cloth used to cover the child. At-last the child's family gives sweets to the Gerias.
