}}Georgetown District High School or better known as GDHS is a high school located in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. The school is under the jurisdiction of the Halton District School Board. As of the 2018-19 school year, approximately 1,500 students were enrolled at Georgetown District High School.[2]

History

Georgetown District High School was first opened on January 3, 1887. At the time, there were a total of 69 students, with 2 teachers.[3] In 2012 the school celebrated its 125th anniversary with a ceremony and town festivities. The construction of GDHS cost $12,000, and was designed by a famous Canadian architect, Edward J. Lennox[4]

Sports

The school team name, common throughout all sports, is the "Rebels". Georgetown teams have won numerous Halton county titles, GHAC titles and OFSAA titles throughout its history. A total of 76 OFSAA titles since the early 1970s has made the "Rebels" the winningest school in OFSAA sport history.

Georgetown is currently most notable for their swimming team, which has consistently placed in the top 3 or won the OFSAA championships. The Rebels swim program has won 49 OFSAA titles starting in 1981. The Rebels are the current OFSAA champions (2018) and have won the last ten overall titles, setting the record for most consecutive OFSAA wins in history, in any sport.[5] In 2012, the Rebels surpassed W.C. Kennedy of Windsor as the most successful team in OFSAA sport history.

The Cross Country team held dominance in the late 70's and 80's taking eighteen titles, while wrestling, volleyball, archery and Track & Field have also won at the OFSAA level.

The Rebel team colors are red, white and blue. "Rebel pride inside" is the school slogan. The former symbol of the 'Rebels' teams was the southern confederate flag. The flag was removed in 1989 by Principal Davies because of threats of lawsuits brought on charges of discrimination. The team name "Rebels" was officially dropped in June 2017.

Field of Dreams

The "Field of Dreams" was a development proposed initially by a local community group led by Mr. Ian Troop in July 2008.[6] It is a multipurpose outdoor field which includes a new track, artificial turf field, lights, electronic scoreboard and seating, started construction in the spring of 2010.

[7] The field was completed for the start of the 2010/2011 school year and has been renamed "Kiwanis Field". It is used for soccer, football, rugby and field lacrosse and is the home field of the Rebels, Georgetown Soccer League and the North Halton Crimson Tide Football League.
