| name = I do not like thee, Doctor Fell | cover = | alt = | type = Nursery rhyme | written = | published = 1680 | writer = Tom Brown | composer = | lyricist = }}I do not like thee, Doctor Fell is an epigram, said to have been written by satirical English poet Tom Brown in 1680.[1][2] Origin and basisThe anecdote associated with the origin of the rhyme is that when Brown was a student at the Christ Church, Oxford, he was caught doing mischief. The dean of Christ Church, John Fell (1625–1686), who later went on to become the Bishop of Oxford, expelled Brown; but offered to take him back if he passed a test. If Brown could extemporaneously translate the thirty-second epigram of Martial (a well known Roman epigramist), his expulsion would be cancelled. The epigram in Latin is as follows: {{quote|{{lang|la|Hoc tantum possum dicere: non amo te.[3] A literal English translation is: {{quote|I do not like you, Sabidius, and I can't say why. This much I can say: I do not like you.}}Brown made the impromptu English translation which became the verse: {{quote|I do not like thee, Doctor Fell, The reason why – I cannot tell; But this I know, and know full well, I do not like thee, Doctor Fell.[3] RecognitionThe rhyme "I do not like thee, Doctor Fell" was not treated as a nursery rhyme, or included in Mother Goose collections, until 1926, following the rhyme's inclusion in "Less-Familiar Nursery Rhymes" by Robert Graves of I, Claudius fame.{{Citation needed|date=July 2011}} References1. ^{{cite book|last= Brewer|first=Ebenezer Cobham|title=The Wordsworth Dictionary of Phrase and Fable|publisher=Wordsworth Editions|year=2001|series=Wordsworth Reference Series|pages=346|isbn=978-1-84022-310-1|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=IgjAJazrBWwC&pg=PA346}} 2. ^{{Citation|last = Jacox |first = Francis |title = On not liking Dr Fell; and the reason why |journal = The New Monthly Magazine |volume = 137 |year = 1866 |url = https://books.google.com/books?id=Jz4FAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA417}} 3. ^1 {{Cite book |first=I. |last=Opie |lastauthoramp=yes |first2=P. |last2=Opie |title=The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes |location= |publisher=Oxford University Press |origyear=1951 |edition=2nd |year=1997 |page=169 |isbn=0-19-860088-7 }} 2 : 1680s poems|English nursery rhymes |
