A large amount of the book was devoted to forgery, with two forgers James Macpherson and Thomas Chatterton, featuring prominently. The novel was apparently a major influence on William Henry Ireland, the author of the Shakespeare Forgeries, who used the subplot about forgery as an inspiration.[2] Ireland was himself reported to be an illegitimate son of Lord Sandwich by another mistress.[3] Publication HistoryAn amended edition of this novel appeared in the spring of 1780 by publisher George Kearsley[4] in a campaign to promote the novel. ReceptionThe Morning Post initially received the letters well, and considered them instructive and inoffensive and painted a colourful picture of 'the dreadful consequences of the passion of love, unrestrained by virtue [...] which fill the mind at once both with horror and pity'.[5] Other ConsiderationsMedia Typee-Book: available for free via Google Books [https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=o5IDAAAAQAAJ&pg=PR1&lpg=PR1&dq=Love+and+Madness,+a+Story+too+True:+in+a+Series+of+Letters+between+Parties+Whose+Names+Would+Perhaps+be+Mentioned+Were+They+Less+Known+or+Lamented.&source=bl&ots=0PC5zGrDmt&sig=rNaewTT0Pwkj1QIOZsC0ikLpt9g&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj-7NKr6b3KAhXFhg8KHabxC1sQ6AEIPDAF#v=onepage&q=Love%20and%20Madness%2C%20a%20Story%20too%20True%3A%20in%20a%20Series%20of%20Letters%20between%20Parties%20Whose%20Names%20Would%20Perhaps%20be%20Mentioned%20Were%20They%20Less%20Known%20or%20Lamented.&f=false here].
