The genus is sometimes divided into two sections based on whether they possess disjunctors - these are small structures in mature fungi that help with spore dispersal.[2] There are about thirty known species in this genus.[2] Most studies of the fungi focuses on their pathogenic effects toward apples, pears and other fruits. The disease it causes is known as brown rot.[2] In Japan, this fungus has seen apothecial uses[2] References1. ^{{cite journal |last=Lumbsch TH, Huhndorf SM. |date=December 2007 |title=Outline of Ascomycota – 2007 |journal=Myconet |volume=13 |issue= |pages=1–58 |id= |url=http://archive.fieldmuseum.org/myconet/outline.asp |accessdate= |publisher=The Field Museum, Department of Botany |location=Chicago, USA }} 2. ^1 2 3 {{cite journal | doi = 10.2307/3793107 | author1 = H J Willets | author2 = J Harada | year = 1984 | title = A Review of Apothecial Production by Monilina Fungi in Japan | journal = Mycologia | volume = 76 | issue = 2 | pages = 314–325 | jstor = 3793107 | format = }} External links
