This species inhabits areas of rocks and eelgrass in coastal waters at depths from {{convert|1|to|150|m|ft|abbr=on}}, though rarely below {{convert|50|m|ft|abbr=on}}. It can reach {{convert|25|cm|in|abbr=on}} in length, though most do not exceed {{convert|20|cm|in|abbr=on}}.
