Rana in Arabic (Arabic: رنا); the name means "eyecatching", stemming from the word yarnū يرنو, meaning "to gaze at longingly". It is a given name for females in Arabic-speaking countries.

In Indian, Nepali and Pakistani culture, "Rāṇā" (Devanāgarī: राणा) has Sanskrit origin and is a given name to males as well as a surname. Rānā (Devanāgarī: राना) belonged to Thar Ghar aristocracy group which assisted the rulers of Gorkha Kingdom.[1] These Rānā (राना) belonged to Magar people while Rāṇā (राणा) were of Khas Rajput origin.[2]
