It is endemic to Elgygytgyn Lake in Chukotka, Far East of Russia,[1][2] together with another char species, the small-mouth char Salvelinus elgyticus.[4] A third char species in the same lake is the Boganid char Salvelinus cf. boganidae.[3][4] TaxonomyThe long-finned char is a morphologically aberrant type of char; when scientifically first described in 1990, it was placed as the single species in Salvethymus, a new monotypic genus.
