Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Jyoti Basu of CPI(M) defeated Chittaranjan Bag of Congress in 1996,[6] Amar Bhattacharya of Congress in 1991,[5]Sardar Amjad Ali of Congress in 1987,[4]Dinabandhu Bairagi of Congress in 1982[3] and Jumman Ali Mollah of Congress in 1977.[2][11]Prior to that the Satgachhia seat did not exist.
