She was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rasipuram constituency as an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate in 1998, and 1999 elections.^[1]^[2]Jayalalithaa appointed Saroja as Minister for Social Welfare in May 2016. This was her first cabinet post in the Government of Tamil Nadu.^[3]
