Číhošť ({{IPA-cs|ˈtʃiːɦoʃc}}; German: Čihošt, from 1939: Tschihoscht) is a village and municipality (obec) in Havlíčkův Brod District in the Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic.

The municipality covers an area of {{convert|16.28|km2|sqmi}}, and has a population of 336 (as at 3 July 2006).

Číhošť lies approximately {{convert|23|km|mi|0}} north-west of Havlíčkův Brod, {{convert|43|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} north-west of Jihlava, and {{convert|77|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} south-east of Prague.

Near the village lies the officially calculated geographical centre of the Czech Republic.

History

The first documented mention of the village of Číhošť comes from the year 1347, when Ctibor, with a prediction from Číhoště, sells three lanes and pubs in Tupadl, the cross-monastery in Drobovice. The witnesses to the treaty are the Mstidruh of Chlum and Vrbka and Artleb of Sačan and Vrbka. At that time, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, mentioned in 1350 as a parish in the German-German Dean, is already remembered.

The first documented coats of arms in the history of the village are the seals of Ctibor's son Hanek of Číhoště dating back to 1347 and 1357. They are depicted in the Atlas of Coats and Seals of August Sedláček's Czech and Moravian Medieval Nobility (Volume 5, pages 141 and 181). Hanek was sold in 1362 by Mareš of Druhanov, who, after his resettlement at the fortress, adopted the predicate from Číhoště.

In 1384-1392 he was the owner of the village Kuneš z Číhoště, who sold it in 1392. After the early death of another well-known owner of the village Jan of Číhoště the property was taken over by his wife Přib, who sold it to the administrator Aleš, later Aleš from Číhoště, after his departure to the monastery. This is commemorated in 1424.

At the end of the 15th century, the owner of the village was reminded by Matouš of Chrenovice and Číhoště, soon replaced by Jan Spel of Prudy and Žlebů, who in 1991 sold Čihošť to Michal Slavat from Chlum and Košumberk. In 1578 the local estate was connected to Ledec, owned by Jaroslav Trčka of Lípa. Since then, Čihošť has been an integral part of the lederish estate, just like the Kožlí village.

In 2006-2010, he served as Mayor Jiří Novák, since 2010 Jaroslav Tvrdík is in charge of this position.

Číhošť miracle

The village was a site of the so-called Číhošť miracle in 1949, which led to a crackdown by communist authorities against the Catholic Church and murder of local priest Josef Toufar.
