The Indians were coached by Bill Hickok in his 1st year as head coach. The team compiled a record of 5–5 and outscored opponents 164 to 102. Carlisle played games against college football's "Big Four" (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Penn) and nearly defeated Yale. The New York Times reported on a run by Isaac Seneca that nearly won the game against Yale: "Seneca was given the ball to go through the centre. He got through with one or two Yale men hanging on to him. Then he squirmed and shook off the Yale men, dodged a man or two, and, making a splendid run down the field, made what was thought to be a touchdown. Nearly all on the grounds shouted themselves hoarse. Men waved their hats in the air, pretty gals clapped their hands ..."[1]However, the referee waved off the touchdown, ruling that Seneca was "down" when the Yale players hung on to him. The New York Times wrote the next day that the referee had made the wrong call and that Carlisle had been robbed of a touchdown, but the game went into the record books as a 12–6 win for Yale.[1] Schedule{{CFB schedule|{{CFB schedule entry | date = September 26 | w/l = w | neutral = y | opponent = {{cfb link|year=1896|team=Dickinson Red Devils|title=Dickinson}} | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Carlisle, PA | score = 28–6 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 3 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Duquesne Athletic Club | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Pittsburgh, PA | score = 18–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 14 | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = Princeton | site_stadium = Osborne Field | site_cityst = Princeton, NJ | score = 6–22 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 24 | w/l = l | neutral = y | opponent = Yale | site_stadium = | site_cityst = New York, NY | score = 6–12 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = October 31 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Harvard | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Cambridge, MA | score = 0–4 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 7 | w/l = l | away = y | opponent = Penn | site_stadium = Franklin Field | site_cityst = Philadelphia, PA | score = 0–21 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 14 | w/l = w | opponent = Cincinnati | site_stadium = Indian Field | site_cityst = Carlisle, PA | score = 28–0 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 21 | w/l = w | away = y | opponent = Penn State | site_stadium = | site_cityst = Harrisburg, PA | score = 48–5 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = November 26 | w/l = l | opponent = Brown | site_stadium = Indian Field | site_cityst = Carlisle, PA | score = 12–24 }} |{{CFB schedule entry | date = December 19 | w/l = w | neutral = y | opponent = Wisconsin | site_stadium = Chicago Coliseum | site_cityst = Chicago, IL | score = 18–8 }} }}[2] References1. ^1 {{cite news|title=Yale Had A Close Call: Defeats Carlisle Indians by 12 Points to 6; Referree Hickock's Wrong Decision in the Second Half Robbed the Indians of a Touchdown|publisher=The New York Times|date=1896-10-25}} {{Carlisle Indians football navbox}}2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/carlisle/1896-schedule.html|title=1896 Carlisle Indian Schedule and Results}} 3 : 1896 college football season|Carlisle Indians football seasons|1896 in sports in Pennsylvania |
