The 2012 Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council in the West Midlands, England. One third of the council was up for election. The shock result{{Citation needed|date=April 2013}} of the election came in Blythe where the Independent Ratepayers ousted a Tory Incumbent.[1][2] Prior to the election, the defending councillor in Shirley West had joined the Greens, having previously sat as an Independent Liberal Democrat.[3] Following the election another Shirley West Liberal Democrat councillor, Andy Hodgson, joined the Greens, taking their total up to 6 seats, and the Liberal Democrats down to 10.[4] Election result{{Election Summary Begin|title = Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council Election, 2012}}{{Election Summary Party||party = Conservative Party (UK) |seats = 9 |gain = 1 |loss = 2 |net = -1 |seats % = 52.9 |votes % = 42.0 |votes = 19,562 |plus/minus = -6.3% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Liberal Democrats (UK) |seats = 3 |gain = 0 |loss = 1 |net = -1 |seats % = 17.6 |votes % = 19.5 |votes = 9,095 |plus/minus = -0.0% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Green Party of England and Wales |seats = 3 |gain = 1 |loss = 0 |net = +1 |seats % = 17.6 |votes % = 11.9 |votes = 5,547 |plus/minus = +4.4% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = Labour Party (UK) |seats = 1 |gain = 1 |loss = 1 |net = 0 |seats % = 5.9 |votes % = 17.3 |votes = 8,075 |plus/minus = +0.7% }}{{Election Summary| |party = Independent Ratepayers & Residents |seats = 1 |gain = 1 |loss = 0 |net = +1 |seats % = 5.9 |votes % = 6.4 |votes = 2,997 |plus/minus = +0.8% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = English Democrats |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 2.4 |votes = 1,115 |plus/minus = +1.3% }}{{Election Summary Party| |party = British National Party |seats = 0 |gain = 0 |loss = 0 |net = 0 |seats % = 0.0 |votes % = 0.3 |votes = 150 |plus/minus = -0.2% }}{{Election box end}} This result had the following consequences for the total number of seats on the council after the elections :[2]
