The fort is nearly square in shape, with two bastions. Robert Knox, English sea captain and famous British prisoner of the Kandyan King Rajasinghe II, and his companion escaped after nineteen years of captivity and reached the Arippu Fort in 1679.[3]The first British Governor of Ceylon, Frederick North, constructed his official summer residence at the beach front, now known as The Doric and converted the fort into accommodation for the officers, who operated the pearl fisheries in the area. The fort building was subsequently converted to a guest house but was abandoned when the civil war spread to the area. HistoryA legend says the Tamil Queen Alli Raani ruled in Mannar region. It believes that her fortress was located where the ruins of fort can be seen today.[4][5] Further, the legend says that Kudiramalai area was her palace,[6] and Queen Alli ruled where Kuveni subsequently ruled.[7] References1. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.mannar.dist.gov.lk/index.php?option=com_phocagallery&view=detail&catid=1%3Amannar&id=4%3Aallirani-fort&tmpl=component&Itemid=59&lang=en | title=Allirani Fort | publisher=Ministry of Public Administration & Home Affairs | accessdate=18 July 2015}} 2. ^{{cite web | url=http://amazinglanka.com/wp/arippu-fort/ | title=Arippu Fort | accessdate=9 November 2014}} 3. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.sundaytimes.lk/120304/Plus/plus_05.html | title=An ancient village, a ruin by the sea and stories of pearls from Taprobane | accessdate=9 November 2014}} 4. ^{{cite web | url=http://archives.dailynews.lk/2012/06/14/fea28.asp | title=Maha Vishnu’s Temple Maha Kumbabheshekam | publisher=Daily News (Sri Lanka) | accessdate=18 July 2015}} 5. ^{{cite book | title=Hinduism a Scientific Religion: & Some Temples in Sri Lanka | publisher=iUniverse | author=Kulendiren, Pon | year=2012 | pages=212 | isbn=1-4759-3673-7}} 6. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.sundaytimes.lk/970518/plus11.html | title=The jewel of the deep | publisher=Sunday Times (Sri Lanka) | accessdate=18 July 2015}} 7. ^{{cite web | url=http://www.sangam.org/2011/08/Aryan_Theory_2.php | title=The Sinhalese of Ceylon and The Aryan Theory | accessdate=18 July 2015}}
