It is sometimes an erect, sometimes prostrate shrub which has pine-like leaves and usually red, 4-part flowers. It is similar to Calothamnus sanguineus except that it has larger fruiting capsules. DescriptionCalothamnus torulosus grows to about {{convert|0.4|m|ft}} tall and has leaves that are about {{convert|20-50|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long. The leaves are circular in cross section and sometimes have a few scattered hairs.[1][2][3]The flowers are red or sometimes a shade of green to scarlet.[1] They have 4 petals and 4 claw-like bundles of stamens with the upper 2 claws broad and flat, sometimes joined for part of their length.[2] Unlike some others in the genus, the flowers and fruit are never buried in corky bark.[4][5] Flowering occurs from September to October[3] and is followed by fruits which are woody, almost spherical capsules. The fruiting capsules have four prominently thickened lobes and are about {{convert|15|mm|in|sigfig=1}} long and wide.[5] Taxonomy and namingCalothamnus torulosus was first formally described by Johannes Schauer in 1843 in ''Dissertatio phytographica de Regelia, Beaufortia et Calothamno from a specimen collected "at the top of the hill at the foot of the mountains of the Darling Range, not far from the town Maddington", now a suburb of Perth.[6] The specific epithet (torulosus) is derived from a Latin word torulus meaning "a tuft of hair".[7]Distribution and habitatCalothamnus torulosus occurs from Perth to Eneabba[4] in the Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest and Swan Coastal Plain biogeographic regions,[3] where it grows on sand and rocky soils derived from granite.[8]ConservationCalothamnus torulosus is classified as "not threatened" by the Western Australian government department of parks and wildlife.[3]References1. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Corrick|first1=Margaret G.|last2=Fuhrer|first2=Bruce A.|title=Wildflowers of southern Western Australia|date=2009|publisher=Rosenberg Publishing|location=[Kenthurst, N.S.W.]|isbn=9781877058844|page=116|edition=3rd|url=https://books.google.com.au/books?id=gzgsXMXxAd0C&pg=PA116&lpg=PA116&dq=Calothamnus+torulosus&source=bl&ots=408x2_xT41&sig=lorBOznMmU3-09bCbbaa-vsCLOc&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CDkQ6AEwBWoVChMIy8OFwruQxwIVSJGUCh3pEA0c#v=onepage&q=Calothamnus%20torulosus&f=false|accessdate=4 August 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q15395122}}2. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Bentham|first1=George|last2=von Mueller|first2=Ferdinand|title=Flora Australiensis (Volume III)|date=1867|publisher=Lovell Reeve & Co.|location=London|page=175|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/41807#page/183/mode/1up|accessdate=4 August 2015}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{FloraBase|name = Calothamnus torulosus’'|id = 5431}} 4. ^1 {{cite journal|last1=Hawkeswood|first1=Trevor J.|title=Nine new species of Calothamnus Labill.
