Born as Hatice Voçibe, she was a member of Abkhazian nobel family, Voçibe. Her father was Mustafa Bey Voçibe. She had two brothers, Murad Bey and Aziz Bey.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=166}} She was the aunt of Inşirah Hanım, second wife of Sultan Mehmed VI.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=188}} Hatice had been brought to Istanbul as a young child, where her father entrusted her to the imperial harem. Her name according to the custom of the Ottoman court was changed to Dürrüaden.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=166-7}} MarriageDürrüade married Mehmed on 10 October 1876 in the Veliahd Palace.{{sfn|Açba|2007|p=167}} Mehmed was thirty two years old, while Dürrüaden was sixteen years old.
