Mathematical careerFormanek earned his Ph.D. in 1970 from Rice University, under the supervision of Stephen M. Gersten.[5][6] He joined the Penn State faculty in 1978, and retired in 2009.[3] In 1972, Formanek was one of two mathematicians to independently discover the central polynomials, which have applications to polynomial identity rings.[7] With Vesselin Drensky, Formanek is the author of the book Polynomial Identity Rings (Birkhäuser, 2004).[8] In 2012, he became one of the inaugural fellows of the American Mathematical Society.[2][9] Chess careerFormanek became a FIDE International Master in 1977.[1] He has won the Pennsylvania State Championship five times, in 1984, 1993, 1997, 1998, and 2004.[10] However, his most famous result from this series may be in 1988, when he led the tournament going into the last round but was defeated by computer program HiTech,[11] becoming the first IM to lose a game to a computer.[12][13] Later the same year HiTech would also defeat grandmaster Arnold Denker.[13] References1. ^1 {{citation|title=Happy Birthday, Ed!|journal=British Chess Magazine|date=May 6, 2012|url=http://www.britishchessmagazine.co.uk/happy-birthday-ed/}}. {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Formanek, Edward William}}2. ^1 {{citation|title=The American Mathematical Society Elects New Fellows from Penn State|publisher=Pennsylvania State University|url=http://science.psu.edu/news-and-events/2012-news/AMSFellows11-2012|date=November 5, 2012}}. 3. ^1 {{citation|url=http://news.psu.edu/story/173585/2009/10/07/faculty-and-staff-news-record-partings-oct-15-2009|title=Faculty and Staff News of Record: Partings Oct. 15, 2009|date=October 7, 2009|publisher=Pennsylvania State University}}. 4. ^1 Player profile, World Chess Federation, retrieved 2015-02-02. 5. ^{{mathgenealogy|id=14976}} 6. ^{{citation|url=http://hdl.handle.net/1911/14599|title=Matrix Techniques in Polycyclic Groups|series=Doctor of Philosophy thesis|publisher=Rice University|first=Edward William|last=Formanek}}. 7. ^{{citation|title=The Algebraic Structure of Group Rings|series=Dover Books on Mathematics|first=Donald S.|last=Passman|publisher=Courier Dover|year=2011|isbn=9780486482064|page=203|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=2xrSHX-rpGMC&pg=PA203}}. 8. ^{{citation|title=Polynomial identity rings, by Vesselin Drensky and Edward Formanek|first=Louis|last=Rowen|department=Book Reviews|journal=Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society|volume=43|year=2006|pages=259–267|doi=10.1090/s0273-0979-06-01082-2 |url=http://www.ams.org/journals/bull/2006-43-02/S0273-0979-06-01082-2/}}. 9. ^List of Fellows of the American Mathematical Society, retrieved 2015-02-02. 10. ^Pennsylvania State Championships Results, retrieved 2015-02-02. 11. ^{{citation|doi=10.1609/aimag.v9i3.946|first=Hans J.|last=Berliner|authorlink=Hans Berliner|title=Hitech Becomes First Computer Senior Master|volume=9|issue=3|year=1988|journal=AI Magazine|pages=85–87}}. 12. ^{{citation|title=Chess expert is no match for super-smart computer|journal=Weekly World News|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=b-wDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA27|date=September 20, 1988}}. 13. ^1 {{citation|title=Computers and Chess - A History|first=Bill|last=Wall|date=August 7, 2007|url=http://www.chess.com/article/view/computers-and-chess---a-history|publisher=chess.com}}. 9 : 1942 births|Living people|20th-century American mathematicians|21st-century American mathematicians|American chess players|Chess International Masters|Rice University alumni|Pennsylvania State University faculty|Fellows of the American Mathematical Society |
