It is currently used for football matches and is the home stadium of Real Avilés. The stadium has a capacity of 5,352 seats: 4,220 of them are in the two main tribunes and 1,232 in the uncovered stand.[1] HistoryInaugurated with the name of Estadio La Exposición on 26 September 1943 with a match between Real Avilés and Real Santander,[2] the stadium changed its name in homage of the mayor of Avilés who proposed its construction in 1956.[3] The stadium also hosted the Spanish Championship of Athletics between 1948 and 1952 and has been totally renovated in 1999. On 28 December 2002, Estadio Román Suárez Puerta hosted the 5–2 win of the Asturian football team against Honduras, in front of a crowd of 7,000 people.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.elcomercio.es/v/20120817/deportes/aviles/suarez-puerta-tendra-finalmente-20120817.html|title=El Suárez Puerta tendrá finalmente capacidad para 5.352 espectadores|publisher=El Comercio|date=17 August 2012|accessdate=26 September 2018|trans-title=Suárez Puerta will finally have a capacity for 5,352 spectators}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=https://www.lne.es/deportes/2018/09/27/campo-solera/2354566.html|publisher=La Nueva España|date=27 September 2018|accessdate=27 September 2018|title=Un campo con solera|trans-title=A stadium with tradition|language=es}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.futbolasturiano.es/noticias8/1921.htm|publisher=Fútbol Asturiano|language=es|date=26 September 2018|accessdate=26 September 2018|title=El Suárez Puerta cumple su 75 Aniversario|trans-title=Suárez Puerta celebrates its 75th anniversary}} 4. ^{{cite web|url=https://as.com/futbol/2002/12/28/mas_futbol/1041030016_850215.html|publisher=Diario As|date=28 December 2002|language=es|accessdate=26 September 2018|title=Asturias mantiene su racha de triunfos|trans-title=Asturias keeps its winning streak}} External links
