Some of them are referred to as Fern because the headstock is inlaid with a fern pattern. The F-5 became the most popular and most imitated American mandolin,[1] and the best-known F-5 was owned by Bill Monroe, the father of bluegrass music, who in turn helped identify the F-5 as the ultimate bluegrass mandolin.[2] The F-5 was designed by Lloyd Loar, who signed all of them by date as long as he worked at Gibson—F-5s are thus identified as, for instance, "a July 9". The most famous of them all is the one he signed on July 9, 1923—the mandolin that ended up being Bill Monroe's instrument.[3] References1. ^{{cite book|last=Rossing|first=Thomas D.|title=Science of String Instruments|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=8yQ_XHh53HUC&pg=PA78|accessdate=14 January 2012|year=2010|publisher=Springer|isbn=978-1-4419-7109-8|page=78}} 2. ^{{cite book|last=Lewis|first=George H.|title=All that glitters: country music in America|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=8_afNI8SL6UC&pg=PA14|accessdate=14 January 2012|year=1993|publisher=Popular Press|isbn=978-0-87972-574-7|page=14}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=The First 'Fern'|last=Gruhn|first=George|authorlink=George Gruhn|author2=Walter Carter|date=March 2012|work=Vintage Guitar|pages=50–52}} External links
