Lid (born 1957) was born in Chicago, IL. He was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in Emporia, Kansas in 2012.[1] His creative teaching strategies earned him a Disney Award in 2004. From 39 Disney Teachers nationwide, Glenn was selected as the Disney Secondary Teacher of The Year.[2] He was a guest on the Tony Danza Show and Chicago Fox Morning News in 2004. He was named a Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction in 2007,[3] received the Davidson Award from the Chemical Industry Council of Illinois in 2007 [4] and selected for an Alumni Merit Award from Elmhurst College, his alma mater in 2005.[5] He is a contributor to a collection of inspirational stories entitled Today I Made a Difference.[6] He is also featured in the book One on One with America’s Most Inspiring Teachers.[7] Teaching AchievementsMr. Lid has taught three levels of chemistry at Proviso East High School in Maywood, IL for 33 years, his entire career (Conceptual, honors and AP Chemistry). He also teaches Biology, General Science, and Physical Science. He is also endorsed to teach Physics and Physical Education.[8] He attended Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, IL and graduated in 1975. He graduated 83rd out of 875, played baseball and wrestled, was a member of the Model United Nations, Parallax (literary magazine), and The National Honor Society. Mr. Lid got his BS degree at Elmhurst College in 1979. He double majored in PE and Biology. Graduating with highest honors, received the DeBruine award in Biology, was vice president of the Biology Honorary Beta Beta Beta, member of Omicron Delta Kappa, and Phi Kappa Phi. He then went on for an MA degree at Concordia University in secondary school administration, 1985. Glenn has coached freshmen football for two years, freshmen wrestling for his entire career,[9] baseball his entire career (head coach since 1991), golf for 4 years (currently).[10] The baseball team was regional and sectional champions in 2003. He was nominated twice as assistant coach of the year by the Illinois Wrestling and Coaches Association in 1990 and 1992.[11] He was also a finalist in Illinois both in 1993 and 2009 for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Math and Science. In 2010 Mr. Lid’s students interviewed a survivor from the nuclear bomb explosion in Hiroshima.[12] Honors and recognitionNational level:
PersonalGlenn Lid is son of Robert C. Lid and Joan E. Lid. He is married to Carol who is a third grade elementary school teacher at Roy School in Northlake, Il. Mr. Lid has five students who have become Golden Apple Scholars[13] and are now teachers themselves. Many former students are now coaches, scientists, doctors, lawyers, and in business. Many of his students have affectionately through the years referred to him as Papa Smurf, Radar O’Riley, and most currently Jimmy Neutron. He is known for his raps and corny sense of humor. His most influential teachers were Mrs.Ruth Hollaway (2nd grade Elementary), Mr.David Hotle (middle school science, Joy Joyce (secondary political science), Dr. Frank Mittermeyer (director of health professions, Elmhurst College), and Lee Marek (professional development). He admires most the man who has been the head wrestling coach at Proviso East for over 40 years, Mr. William Cartwright. He has established a book fund for Proviso East graduates that attend Elmhurst College.[14] External links
