It was first described in 1903 by American mycologist Charles Horton Peck from collections made growing on fallen cones of ponderosa pine, near the base of the Moscow Mountains (Moscow, Idaho). Peck thought it was similar to H. aurantiacum, differing in its smaller size, more slender stipe, non-zoned flesh, more even cap, and somewhat unusual substrate.[3] Howard James Banker transferred it to the genus Hydnellum in 1906. Its range extends from New Mexico to British Columbia and the Great Lakes region, where it grows in coniferous forests.[2] References1. ^1 2 {{cite book |author=McKnight VB, McKnight KH. |title=A Field Guide to Mushrooms: North America | series=Peterson Field Guides |publisher=Houghton Mifflin |location=Boston, Massachusetts |year=1987 |page=94 |isbn=978-0-395-91090-0 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=kSdA3V7Z9WcC&pg=PA94}} [1][2][3]2. ^1 {{cite journal |author=Peck CH. |title=New species of fungi |journal=Bulletin of the Torrey Botanical Club |year=1903 |volume=30 |pages=95–101 (see pp. 97–98) |url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/712774 |doi=10.2307/2478879}} 3. ^1 {{cite web |title=GSD Species Synonymy: Hydnellum conigenum (Peck) Banker |url=http://www.speciesfungorum.org/GSD/GSDspecies.asp?RecordID=469490 |publisher=Species Fungorum.
