Jones (December 29, 1851 - December 12, 1927) was a chief justice on the South Carolina Supreme Court. Jones was born in Newberry, South Carolina on December 29, 1851. Jones began college at Newberry College, but he graduated from Erskine College in 1870. After college, Jones returned to Newberry, taught school for two years, and studied to practice law. He moved to Lancaster, South Carolina in 1875.[1] In 1890, Jones was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, and he was chosen to be the Speaker of the House upon the election of John M.L. Irby as a United States senator. Jones had been the vice president of the South Carolina Constitutional Convention of 1895. On January 30, 1896, he was unanimously elected an associate justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court.[2] The newly adopted South Carolina Constitution created a fourth seat on the state's highest court, and Jones was the first person elected to fill the position.[3] On January 22, 1902, he was reelected to an eight year term. When Chief Justice Pope resigned, Jones was chosen to complete the unexpired term.[1] He was sworn in on April 15, 1909.[4] On September 11, 1911, Jones sent his resignation to Governor Blease, effective January 9, 1912.[1] Jones was married to Rebecca Wyse.[1] He died on December 12, 1927, and is buried at the West Side Cemetery in Lancaster, South Carolina.[5] References1. ^1 2 3 {{cite news | url=http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/newspapers/doc/v2:13CCA871AD118D5A@GBNEWS-143DCDF66F5ECA0A@2419293-143DC3CA693BF3F9@0-143F504040D17130@/?search_terms=%22South%20Carolina%20Supreme%20Court%22%7Cjustice%7Celection&s_dlid=DL0114092000223608079&s_ecproduct=SUB-Y-6995-RI&s_ecprodtype=RENEW-A-R&s_trackval=&s_siteloc=&s_referrer=&s_subterm=Subscription%20until%3A%2007%2F14%2F2015&s_docsbal=%20&s_subexpires=07%2F14%2F2015&s_docstart=&s_docsleft=&s_docsread=&s_username=sfick29403@att.net&s_accountid=AC0113061420484320982&s_upgradeable=no | title=Jones Candidate for Governorship | work=News & Courier | date=September 13, 1911 | accessdate=September 19, 2014 | location=Charleston, South Carolina | pages=1A}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Jones, Ira B.}}{{SouthCarolina-politician-stub}}2. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/newspapers/doc/v2:11210D30DA68B248@GBNEWS-1140362F276864E8@2418329-114036300FEC04F0@5-114036326A3079E0@Sketch+of+Life+of+Ira+B.+Jones+Career+of+next+Chief+Justice+Prepared+by+Gen/?search_terms=justice%7CJones%7Cira%7CB.&s_dlid=DL0114092001090612519&s_ecproduct=SUB-Y-6995-RI&s_ecprodtype=RENEW-A-R&s_trackval=&s_siteloc=&s_referrer=&s_subterm=Subscription%20until%3A%2007%2F14%2F2015&s_docsbal=%20&s_subexpires=07%2F14%2F2015&s_docstart=&s_docsleft=&s_docsread=&s_username=sfick29403@att.net&s_accountid=AC0113061420484320982&s_upgradeable=no | title=Sketch of Life of Ira B.
