It was released on March 4, 2014 through Arts & Crafts Records in North America.[4] A video for the song "Rescue, Mister", directed by Sabrina Ratté, premiered in January 2014.[5] The album debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[6] DevelopmentThe album was developed solely by Robert Alfons since Austra's Maya Postepski left Trust shortly after the release of their first album TRST. Joyland was "written in different places in the world while touring" as opposed to the first album which was primarily developed in Toronto. In Alfons's opinion that made a big difference, because the album was now influenced by the vast "energy from the live shows" and a boost of self-confidence. Alfons also states that this boost has led him to be "a bit more playful with many aspects of the record", especially his vocals.[7][8] Robert Alfons listed video game soundtracks, acid house and early techno music, Kate Bush, Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins and Lee Hazlewood as influences for Joyland.[9][10] Critical reception{{Album ratings| MC = 72/100[12] | rev1 = AllMusic | rev1Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[11] | rev2 = Consequence of Sound | rev2score = B-[12] | rev3 = DIY | rev3Score = {{Rating|4|5}}[13] | rev4 = Exclaim! | rev4score = 8/10[14] | rev5 = The Guardian | rev5score = {{Rating|3|5}}[1] | rev6 = The Line of Best Fit | rev6score = 7.5/10[15] | rev7 = MusicOMH | rev7score = {{Rating|4|5}}[16] | rev8 = Pitchfork | rev8score = 6.8/10[17] | rev9 = The Skinny | rev9score = {{Rating|4|5}}[18] | rev10 = Under the Radar | rev10score = 7/10[19] }}Joyland received generally positive reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 72, based on 13 reviews.[20] MusicOMH praised the album by stating that "Joyland does an excellent job of sharpening and streamlining Trust’s sound into something even better than that displayed on the debut."[16] Pitchfork gave the album a score of 6.8, concluding that it shares "many similarities" in comparison to Trust's previous record, TRST (2012), but "little growth."[17] Daniel Sylvester of Exclaim! opined, "Although a few tracks ("Geryon," "Four Gut") suffer from muddy and unfocused melodies, there are far too many great ideas, quirky earworms and sonic peaks to give any critic reason to lampoon the title of this well-conceived, well-executed album."[14] Track listing{{Track listing| all_writing = Robert Alfons | title1 = Slightly Floating | length1 = 3:34 | title2 = Geryon | length2 = 4:23 | title3 = Capitol | length3 = 4:53 | title4 = Joyland | length4 = 3:18 | title5 = Are We Arc? | length5 = 3:48 | title6 = Icabod | length6 = 4:29 | title7 = Four Gut | length7 = 5:11 | title8 = Rescue, Mister | length8 = 4:31 | title9 = Lost Souls/Eelings | length9 = 4:33 | title10 = Peer Pressure | length10 = 5:20 | title11 = Barely | length11 = 5:25 }}{{Track listing | collapsed = yes | headline = Mexican digital bonus track[21] | title12 = Mar | length12 = 3:03 }} PersonnelCredits adapted from the liner notes of Joyland.[22] {{col-begin}}{{col-2}}Musician
