Mark Merila (born November 9, 1971) is a scout for the San Diego Padres and a former baseball player. Merila was born in Litchfield, Minnesota, and attended University of Minnesota. While with the University of Minnesota, he played on the school's baseball team, and was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year in 1991 and Big Ten Conference Baseball Player of the Year in 1994. He also broke Minnesota single-season and career records for batting average with a .452 average in 1994 and a .393 career average.[1] He was also selected an All-American second baseman in 1994.[2] Near the end of his senior year at Minnesota, Merila was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which was treated with radiation therapy.[1] He was drafted by Major League Baseball teams twice - first, he was taken in the 10th round of the 1993 draft, though he refused to sign. He was next taken by the Padres in the 33rd round of the 1994 draft, beginning his professional career that year. He played for the Spokane Indians in 1994, hitting .253 in 54 games. In 1995, he played for the Idaho Falls Braves, hitting .284 in 56 games. Overall, he hit .268 in his two-year career. He also pitched in two games, posting a 32.40 ERA.[3] He retired from professional baseball due to a brain tumor. Following his playing career, he became the Padres' bullpen catcher. After the tumor returned in 2005, he was forced to give up his bullpen catching duties, however he still served as an aide to third base coach Glenn Hoffman.[4] After recovering from his second bout of brain cancer, he returned to the job of bullpen catcher, then in 2012 was made a team scout.[5][6] References1. ^1 {{cite book|title=Tales from the Minnesota Gophers: A Collection of the Greatest Gopher Stories Ever Told|author=Ray Christensen, Dave Mona|publisher=Skyhorse Publishing, Inc.|year=2013|isbn=1613217005}} {{Big Ten Conference Baseball Player of the Year navbox}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Merila, Mark}}2. ^{{cite news|title=All-America|newspaper=The Salina Journal|date=June 3, 1994|page=14|url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/1413587/?terms=%22mark%2Bmerila%22%2Bminnesota}} 3. ^[https://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=merila001mar BR Minors] 4. ^{{cite news|title=Mark Merila|newspaper=San Diego Magazine|date=September 2009|url=http://www.sandiegomagazine.com/San-Diego-Magazine/September-2009/Mark-Merila/}} 5. ^{{cite news|title=Padres' Merila trades uniform for scouting job|date=March 29, 2012|newspaper=San Diego Union-Tribune|url=http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/mar/29/padres-merila-trades-uniform-scouting-job/ San Diego Union Tribune}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Still Here|publisher=Sports on Earth|author=Pat Borzi|date=July 30, 2013|url=http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/55167928/san-diego-padres-scout-former-bullpen-catcher-mark-merila-stays-in-baseball-while-fighting-cancer}} 9 : Living people|1971 births|Major League Baseball bullpen catchers|San Diego Padres coaches|San Diego Padres scouts|Spokane Indians players|Idaho Falls Braves players|Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball players|People from Litchfield, Minnesota |
