It has been found only in the state of New Hampshire in the northeastern United States.[3][4][5] The genetics of Rubus is extremely complex, so that it is difficult to decide on which groups should be recognized as species. There are many rare species with limited ranges such as this. Further study is suggested to clarify the taxonomy.[6] Some studies have suggested that R. aculifer may have originated as a hybrid between R. allegheniensis and R. setosus.[7] References1. ^The Plant List, Rubus aculifer Fernald {{Taxonbar|from=Q17247095}}2. ^{{PLANTS|id=RUAC5|taxon=Rubus aculifer|accessdate=23 October 2015}} 3. ^{{cite web|url=http://bonap.net/MapGallery/County/Rubus%20whartoniae.png|title=Biota of North America Program 2014 county distribution map|publisher=}} 4. ^[https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/607473#page/331/mode/1up Fernald, Merritt Lyndon. 1940.
