It is served by Watsa Airport, a grass airstrip {{convert|4|km}} south of the town. Watsa was the location of the VI battalion of the Force Publique in the 1940s and 1950s.[1] Between 1998 and 2000, co-circulating Marburg virus and Ravn virus caused 154 cases of Marburg virus disease and 128 deaths among illegal gold miners in Watsa and the nearby Durba Mine.[2] In January and February 2011 the Lords Resistance Army attacked people in the territories of Dungu, Faradje, Niangara and Watsa, causing 33,000 people to be displaced. They were slow to return due to the feeble response of government security forces.[3] ClimateKöppen-Geiger climate classification system classifies its climate as tropical monsoon (Am).[4]{{Weather box|metric first=yes |single line=yes |location=Watsa |temperature colour=pastel |Jan high C=30.8 |Feb high C=31.1 |Mar high C=30.5 |Apr high C=29.6 |May high C=28.7 |Jun high C=27.8 |Jul high C=26.6 |Aug high C=26.7 |Sep high C=27.7 |Oct high C=28.5 |Nov high C=29.5 |Dec high C=30.2 |Jan mean C=24.2 |Feb mean C=24.5 |Mar mean C=24.4 |Apr mean C=24 |May mean C=23.3 |Jun mean C=22.7 |Jul mean C=22 |Aug mean C=21.9 |Sep mean C=22.3 |Oct mean C=22.9 |Nov mean C=23.5 |Dec mean C=23.9 |Jan low C=17.7 |Feb low C=18 |Mar low C=18.3 |Apr low C=18.4 |May low C=18 |Jun low C=17.6 |Jul low C=17.4 |Aug low C=17.2 |Sep low C=17 |Oct low C=17.3 |Nov low C=17.5 |Dec low C=17.6 |precipitation colour=green |Jan precipitation mm=45 |Feb precipitation mm=57 |Mar precipitation mm=122 |Apr precipitation mm=196 |May precipitation mm=193 |Jun precipitation mm=179 |Jul precipitation mm=184 |Aug precipitation mm=234 |Sep precipitation mm=201 |Oct precipitation mm=213 |Nov precipitation mm=126 |Dec precipitation mm=50 |source 1= Climate-Data.org (altitude: 1022m)[4] }} References1. ^{{cite book|last=Janssens|first=Émile|authorlink=Émile Janssens|title=Histoire de la Force Publique|year=1979|publisher=Ghesquière & Partners Éditeurs|location=x|pages=239–240}} {{DRCongo-geo-stub}}2. ^{{Cite journal | last1 = Bausch | first1 = D.
