Bharat Fritz Werner, popularly known as BFW, is an Indian machine tool manufacturer headquartered in Bengaluru, India. BFW designs and manufactures precision machine tools mostly computer numerically controlled (CNC), such as vertical machining centres and horizontal machining centres, horizontal turning centres, vertical turning centres and special purpose machines. Most of its manufacturing and assembly processes occur at the company's main facility in Bengaluru.

About the company

Founded in 1961, BFW is one of the flagship companies of the Kothari Group which started its operation in collaboration with Fritz Werner Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH of West Germany.

History

• 1961 – BFW was founded by Late Shri G. D. Kothari, then Chairman of Kothari Group of Companies. Its first product was knee-type milling machines. These products were manufactured in technical collaboration with Fritz Werner WerkzeugmaschinenGmBH of then West Germany. Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) was the only other machine tool manufacturers in India during that time.

• 1970 – BFW branches out into the production and supply of Special Purpose Machines (SPM).

• 1979 – The company received its first bulk machine order.

• 1983 – BFW was one of the earliest exporters of machine tools and saw record exports of its products to erstwhile USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics).

• 1985 – Company opened its first R&D facility after receiving the formal approval from the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

• 1990 – The early 90s saw BFW becoming the SPM (Special Purpose Machines) manufacturer and in the year 1993, BFW supplied its first cylinder block & cylinder head transfer line. In the latter part of the 90s, BFW started manufacturing high-speed machining centres and started doing business with two-wheelers manufacturer in India.

• 2002 – In the year 2002, BFW marked their foray into serving the textile machinery sector. Slowly, BFW branched out into several new product lines such as Double Column VMCs (Vertical Machining Centres), high-speed VMCs, Vertical Turret Lathes (VTLs), and 5-axis VMCs and HMCs.

• 2011 – In 2011, BFW completed 50 successful years of operations. BFW also entered into a strategic partnership with Spinner GmBH for offering CNC Turning Centres (HTLs) to the Indian market.

• 2012 – BFW acquired matec Maschinenbau GmbH, a manufacturer of travelling column & Gantry-type 5-axis VMCs.

• 2016 – BFW established the Dr Kalam Centre for Innovation.

• 2017 – Announced a major facility expansion for its Hosur and Bangalore locations.

Products

The company manufactures several lines of CNC machine tools for different industry segments. BFW has more than 400 product variants.

Certifications

BFW is an ISO9001:2000 and ISO14001:2004 certified company. The company has completed the certification process that is required to affix the CE mark to its products.

Acquisitions

BFW acquired the turning business of Proteck Machinery Pvt Ltd. in May 2015.
