Charles C. Copeland is an American infrastructure engineer who has helped preserve and maintain several well-known New York City buildings and has developed innovative energy-conservation initiatives. Among the more iconic buildings are the Empire State Building,[1] Grand Central Terminal,[2] and the Alexander Hamilton Customs House.[3] The energy-conserving innovations include an early (1974) solar energy rooftop installation in Manhattan[4] and a 2015 patent for a control sequence to reduce peak utility steam demand in Manhattan buildings.[5] He is President and CEO of Goldman Copeland Consulting Engineers,[6] which also works with many of the nation’s largest commercial property owners. Early life and educationCharles Copeland was born and raised in New York City. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology[7] and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering at City College of New York. He is a licensed professional engineer. CareerIn 1970, Charles Copeland joined consulting engineering firm Goldman & Sokolow, founded in 1968[8], which became Goldman Copeland in 1991. He has overseen the firm’s work on such New York City landmarks as Carnegie Hall[1], Columbia University, the Empire State Building[1], Grand Central Terminal[2], the Guggenheim Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and New York University. He began addressing energy needs in 1974, designing an early, influential solar collector thermal installation for a homesteading group resurrecting an abandoned building on Manhattan’s Lower East Side[4]. A windmill on the roof occasionally created an excess of electric power, which led to a dispute with Con Edison, which at that time prohibited any connection to their electrical grid. The dispute rose to the New York State Public Service Commission, where the homesteaders – represented pro bono by former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark – prevailed[9]. The ruling was a crucial forerunner of federal enactment in 1978 of the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, which was key to enabling safe connections to the electrical grid.[10] AwardsCharles Copeland has received numerous awards and recognition. In 2018, he oversaw the preparation of a geothermal screening tool for every lot in New York City, which was honored with a Platinum Award by the Association of Consulting Engineers Council[11]. Also in 2018, the New York Energy Consumers Council presented him with its leadership and innovation award for his legacy of creative energy solutions[12]. In 2015, he was awarded a patent for a control sequence to reduce peak utility steam demand in New York City buildings by storing thermal energy in building hydronic systems[5]. He was named Energy Engineer of the Year in 2006 by the Association of Energy Engineers, and was named a Fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers in 1991[13] References1. ^1 2 {{Cite web|url=http://nyrej.com/eom-copeland-president-of-goldman-copeland|title=Executive of the Month: Copeland, president of Goldman Copeland: Has engineered many of New York's most iconic buildings|website=nyrej.com|access-date=2019-01-09}} {{authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Copeland, Charles}}2. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://www.crainsnewyork.com/professional-services/man-who-air-conditioned-grand-central-terminal-worries-about-climate-change|title=The man who air-conditioned Grand Central Terminal worries about climate change|date=2018-10-03|website=Crain's New York Business|access-date=2019-01-09}} 3. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.thefreelibrary.com/Alexander+Hamilton+U.S.+Customs+House:+renovation+preserves+exquisite...-a019418704|title=Alexander Hamilton U.S. Customs House: renovation preserves exquisite art while creating functional tenant spaces. - Free Online Library|website=www.thefreelibrary.com|access-date=2019-01-09}} 4. ^1 {{Cite web|url=https://rew-online.com/energy-pioneer-recalls-days-of-windmills-solar-panels-and-upstart-new-yorkers-who-led-charge-for-change/|title=Energy pioneer recalls windmills, solar panels and New Yorkers who led charge for change|last=Chen|first=Jackson|date=2018-11-15|website=Real Estate Weekly|access-date=2019-01-09}} 5. ^1 {{Cite web|url=http://www.puretemp.com/pcmatters/us-patent-8955763|title=An inside look at U.S. Patent 8955763 #energystorage #GoldmanCopeland|website=www.puretemp.com|access-date=2019-01-09}} 6. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.goldmancopeland.com/our-firm/leadership/|title=Leadership {{!}} Goldman Copeland|access-date=2019-01-09}} 7. ^{{Cite web|url=http://honorroll.mst.edu/2016/givingclubs/consecutivedonors/|title=Consecutive Donors|last=Technology|first=Missouri University of Science and|website=honorroll.mst.edu|access-date=2019-01-09}} 8. ^{{Cite web|url=https://csengineermag.com/goldman-copeland-celebrates-50-years-engineering-excellence/|title=Goldman Copeland celebrates 50 years of engineering excellence|date=2018-04-24|website=Civil + Structural Engineer magazine|access-date=2019-01-09}} 9. ^{{Cite web|url=http://gothamist.com/2014/09/29/east_village_windmill_nyc.php|title=The Almost Forgotten Story Of The 1970s East Village Windmill|last=Love|first=Shayla|website=Gothamist|access-date=2019-01-09}} 10. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.bloomberg.com/tosv2.html?vid=&uuid=88d1ea20-1423-11e9-9375-8f3a90d44cce&url=L25ld3MvYXJ0aWNsZXMvMjAxOC0xMS0wOS9hLTQwLXllYXItb2xkLXJlbmV3YWJsZS1lbmVyZ3ktbGF3LW1heS1iZS1yZWFkeS1mb3ItYS1yZXZhbXA=|title=Bloomberg - Are you a robot?|website=www.bloomberg.com|access-date=2019-01-09}} 11. ^{{Cite web|url=https://acecny.org/page/eeawinners18|title=2018 Engineering Excellence Awards - American Council of Engineering Companies of New York|website=acecny.org|access-date=2019-01-09}} 12. ^{{Cite web|url=https://www.prweb.com/releases/nyecc_announces_2018_energy_new_york_award_recipients_for_vision_innovation_and_leadership_in_energy/prweb15868074.htm|title=NYECC Announces 2018 Energy New York Award Recipients for Vision, Innovation and Leadership in Energy|website=PRWeb|access-date=2019-01-09}} 13. ^{{Cite web|url=http://ashraecof.org/members/MembersofCollege.htm|title=ASHRAE College Of Fellows|website=ashraecof.org|access-date=2019-01-09}} 7 : Year of birth missing (living people)|Living people|Missouri University of Science and Technology alumni|Engineers from New York (state)|People from New York City|City College of New York alumni|21st-century American engineers |
