Documentary films were originally called 'actuality' films and were only a minute or less in length. Over time documentaries have evolved to be longer in length and to include more categories, such as educational, observational, and even 'docufiction'. Documentaries are also educational and often used in schools to teach various principles. Social media platforms such as YouTube, have allowed documentary films to improve the ways the films are distributed and able to educate and broaden the reach of people who receive the information.

Documentary Film

A documentary film is used to present a nonfictional event, person, place, or time period in order to educate its audience.[1]

Educational Film

  • Documentaries are shown in schools around the world in order to educate students. Used to introduce various topics to children, they are often used with a school lesson or shown many times to reinforce an idea.

Pros of Educational Film Use in School

  • A 2007 study from the German Research Foundation found that, "participants in the Film Repetition condition and in the School Lesson plus Film condition performed equally well and significantly better than those in the Film once condition and School Lesson once condition."[2] The pattern of repetition has been shown to boost memory performance. Likewise, students perform better when they are taught with a school lesson which is reinforced by an educational film. An educational film also provides a sense of entertainment for students and increases their interest in the topic.[3]

Cons of Educational Film Use in School

  • The negative side of educational films in school is the director's creative license. As seen before, "some popular historical movies contain major factual errors."[3] When a film introduces incorrect facts, "it enhances the likelihood that incorrect details from the movie are stored in memory."[3] Educational film if presented accurately as well as reviewed for this accuracy can be used to reinforce topics. However, educational film can also mislead the student indirectly, causing a problem for this tool of learning.

YouTube in School Education Systems

  • Because YouTube is a global social media platform for videos, it is also used in classrooms as an educational resource. YouTube has the potential to, "dramatically accelerate scientific advance," and that, "certain public school systems, non-profits, and charter schools use YouTube videos of outstanding educators n the training and professional development of teachers." The versatility of YouTube has allowed for the proliferation of knowledge to millions of students around the world as, "the short, easy to understand videos available can explain difficult concepts."[6] Many teachers use the video platform to introduce real examples of topics. Another useful side of YouTube is one of its most important and, "is changing how we learn because it is free to use."[6] This is especially important for students in developing countries as they have limited opportunities for education. With YouTube these students are able to receive the education they deserve in a way that is mare enjoyable. YouTube continues to change lives and change the future of generations to come. YouTube will be a major factor in years to come in the educational system.[4]
