Heather Benning is a sculptor from rural Saskatchewan who primarily works in large scale site specific installations using a variety of materials.[1] Benning was born 1980 in Humboldt Saskatchewan and raised on a farm. In 2009, Benning finished her Masters of Sculpture at the Edinburgh College of Art & Design in Scotland.[1] CareerHeather Benning's work focuses on rural prairie life and “highlights the historical shift from small family farms to sprawling agri-business compounds. She is also defying the predominance of urban themes in contemporary art.”[2] The most notable of Benning’s works is The Dollhouse, which began in 2007 and took 18 months to complete. This large scale dollhouse began as an abandoned farm house, which Benning refurbished in a 1960s style. One outside wall was replaced with plastic sheeting, so the interior was visible from the outside. The Dollhouse was located just off the Canadian Highway 2, in southwest Manitoba.[3] In 2014, once The Dollhouse became unsafe, Heather Benning burnt the house down.
